What we do

Roadside and pedestrian protection.

Footway gantries, cone runs and boarded walkways so the pavement stays open and the public stays out of the work.

Boarded pedestrian walkway with cones and a handrail, carrying the footway past a rebuilt stone wall.

The moment a scaffold meets a pavement it stops being a job about the building and starts being a job about everyone walking past it. Prams, wheelchairs, someone carrying shopping in the dark in February — the structure has to work for all of them or it goes in the road, and then it is a job about traffic as well.

Most of our terraces sit straight onto the footway, so this is not a specialism bolted on the side. It is half of what a West Cumbrian street job actually is: a protected route past the work, wide enough to use, lit and signed at both ends, and reinstated every night before we leave.

We arrange the permit with the local authority rather than leaving it with you, and we set the walkway out before the scaffold goes up, not around it afterwards.

What's included.

  • Boarded pedestrian walkways with handrails, kept to a usable width for prams and wheelchairs
  • Footway gantries and fans where the work is directly over the route
  • Cone runs, barriers and signage at both approaches, checked daily
  • Lighting on the walkway where the route is used after dark
  • Highways licences and pavement permissions arranged with the council
  • Reinstatement of the footway at the end of each working day, not the end of the job

How we stay compliant.

  • Layouts to Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual for anything affecting the highway
  • TG20:21 compliant designs for the scaffold carrying the protection
  • Public liability cover in place and evidenced before the permit is applied for
  • Daily checks on barriers, lighting and signage recorded with the weekly inspection
  • Handover certificate covering the protected route as well as the working lifts
