Where we work
Scaffolding in St Bees.
Sandstone cliffs and a Norman priory.

St Bees is a small village with a disproportionate amount of listed fabric in it. The priory church of St Mary and St Bega is Norman and still has the twelfth-century west door, and St Bees School has been there since 1583. Work on either is heritage work, whatever else it is called.
The village sits under St Bees Head, the red sandstone cliffs that give the place its colour and its weather. Anything on the seafront takes wind and salt straight off the Irish Sea, and the beach car park end of the village is as exposed as anywhere on this coast.
It is also the start of the Coast to Coast, so through the summer there is a steady stream of walkers past whatever we are working on. Pedestrian protection is not optional here.
What we deal with in St Bees.
- Listed fabric at the priory and the school, needing agreed fixings
- Red sandstone that spalls under careless loading
- Full seafront exposure to wind and salt
- Heavy foot traffic through the village in walking season
- Storm-damage work through winter on exposed property
