Where we work

Scaffolding in Egremont.

Red sandstone.

Scaffold to a semi-detached house, banner on the top lift and a boarded platform running the full elevation.

Egremont is red sandstone, and that one fact shapes nearly every job in the town. The castle ruins above Main Street are the same stone as the houses below them, and it is a soft one — it spalls, it holds water, and it does not forgive an anchor drilled without thought.

Main Street is unusually wide for a Cumbrian town, which is a small mercy when you are trying to get a wagon in. Behind it the stock tightens up quickly into terraces built for the iron ore men, most of them with no rear access at all.

We tie into Egremont sandstone carefully, or we build independent and do not tie into it at all. On the older stock we would rather carry the load ourselves than trust a fixing.

What we deal with in Egremont.

  • Red sandstone that spalls if it is loaded or drilled carelessly
  • Terraced stock behind Main Street with no rear access
  • Wide market street, which helps with loading and pedestrian routes
  • Heritage fabric around the castle and the older core
  • Render and pointing work as the standing repair job
