Where we work

Scaffolding in Whitehaven.

Harbour and Georgian town stock.

Scaffold to a green-rendered house, two boarded lifts and yellow-sleeved standards along the drive.

Whitehaven was one of the first planned towns in Britain, laid out on a grid for the Lowthers in the seventeenth century, and it still is one. That grid is why so much of the centre is a conservation area, and why so many jobs here start with a conversation about what we are allowed to fix into.

Then there is the harbour. Lowther Street, Duke Street and everything running down to the quays catch wind straight off the Irish Sea with nothing in the way. Sheeting a frontage down there without designing for the load is how you end up with a scaffold that moves.

It is mostly sandstone and render over sandstone, which is soft, spalls when you load it wrong, and does not enjoy having anchors drilled into it casually.

What we deal with in Whitehaven.

  • Conservation-area stock where tie positions need agreeing before work starts
  • Full exposure to westerlies on anything near the harbour
  • High street frontages that have to keep trading through the job
  • Sandstone and lime mortar that will not take careless fixings
  • Tight streets on the grid, with limited space for a wagon

What we do here.
